About Fatimah Al Jarrari

Fatimah Al Jarrari is an educator, collaborator, art director and a contemporary designer who infuses multidisciplinary artistry into her practice. With a focus on environmental consciousness, Fatimah enacts ethical domestic and internationally based manufacturing practices. The use of repurposed and antique fabrics from all over the globe limits the production of each garment and creates an exclusive, eco-friendly creation that is one of a kind. Fatimah’s collections are a sensory experience, combining touch (skin care products), smell (fragrances), sight (the garments and the art), taste (curated wine and canapés) and sound (the music).

In a time where the Art World of Melbourne, Australia was collapsing, with major galleries shutting down, Fatimah Jarrari was producing, directing, curating and launching national and international exhibits, cultural events, giving a platform to many emerging artists. This work proved beneficial as all the emerging artists that were showcased are now known globally.

When Fatimah moved into Sommerset Place the laneway was derelict filled with cars, rubbish, drugs, drunks and the homeless. Fatimah worked with the City of Melbourne to revamp the laneway into what it is today transforming it into a space filled with beauty and the bustle of a functioning urban landscape.

Fatima also directed one of Melbourne's best known art galleries: Gallery One Three. At Gallery One Three she established a strong reputation for both contemporary and experimental curating. The gallery produced and co-produced fashion, visual art, music, local brands, designers, DJs, performance acts, art and architectural installations and opera that have pushed the boundaries with cultural events. Some of Melbourne's most respected educational institutes and charity organisations have played a part, attracting both artists and audiences at a local, national and international level.

Fatimah Al Jarrari began her career as an educator at a private, hair and beauty institution. (The Australian College of Hair, Design and Beauty). Fatimah was instrumental in the introduction of hair and beauty subjects in the VCE and VCAL programs. Fatimah held the role of artistic director and head of module development throughout this time. Fatimah single-handedly took the institute from the brink of bankruptcy into a multi-million dollar company and a leading force in the hair and beauty education sector, paving the way for others.

Fatimah now works primarily as a creative multidisciplinary designer, conceptualizing each new collection around a core question. Following a two-year hiatus in which Fatimah worked on ‘listening to her own voice,’ she exhibited Mind the Gap, her A/W19 collection, at Paris Fashion Week in February of 2019, where she was chosen as ‘The One to Watch in 2019’ by Flying Solo, New York. Mind the Gap focused its narrative around ‘the human scale amongst humanity,’ exploring the effects of circumstance and the significance of individuals in the world. Fatimah wished to address the global epidemic of homelessness, learning about the experiences of homeless individuals as part of her creative process.
